  • Tokio Medium Circle, 23 OCT 1890
  • Yokohama Medium Circle, 23 OCT 1890
  • Receiver New York 11-16-90 on backside of cover

Remarks: I find the letters in the Yokohama Medium Circle smaller than in other Medium circle cancellations, only about 2 mm in height

versus the normal 3 mm.

8to2: 2 Sen Foreign Mail Postcard FC4 from Tokyo to Colombus, Ohio

  • Tokio Medium Circle: 5 MAR 1892

8to3: Cover without stamp (Service des Postes) from Tokyo via Yokohama to Berlin in Germany.

  • Tokio Medium Circle with M.O.O. in violet: 7 OCT 1893
  • Tokyo Meiji with large lettering in brown: 7 X 1893
  • Yokohama Meiji with serifs: 8 X 1893 on back
  • Berlin arrival marking: 10 11 93  on back.

Remark: I have shown this M.O.O. marking (probably Money Order Office) to quite a number of experts, dealers and auctioneers here in Japan - nobody had ever seen this type of postmark before. So this cover with the M.O.O. can very well be unique.

8ha1: 2 Sen UPU Koban

  • Hakodate Medium Circle: 14 JUN 1894

Remark: This is an exceptional late use of this Medium Circle normally applied from October 1891 to February 1892.  The latest report of a Hakodate Meiji stamp is from 1894. 5. 24 and the first of  Medium Single Circle with a 2 figure year is from 1994. 12. 29. It looks as if the old Medium Circle with the 4 figure year was reused in the time between the Meiji and the 2 figure year cancellation.
